Why do I do Reiki?

I would love to teach you how to “do Reiki”. Let me attune you to this wonderful Japanese healing art, and start your spiritual journey on the Reiki path. Just complete the Contact form on this website, or email hello@amethystcentre.com. Now someone asked me the other day why I do Reiki. It’s a question with a story behind the answer, and here is the story. I only present it as my experience.

Back in the 90s I was teaching adults with moderate to severe mental health problems in West Yorkshire. I worked with two teaching assistants: Marie was studying aromatherapy at White Rose school in Leeds and I had a lovely time being her guinea pig! The other was Jeannie. Now when Jeannie walked in the room, it would light up. If things were getting fractious, they would calm down. She just exuded calm, love and light! So I asked her “Jeannie, what do you do?” and she told me it was Reiki. “Well you must teach me to do it then!” I said. She gently told me that she couldn’t teach me as she wasn’t at the right level, but there was an old saying: “when the student is ready, the teacher appears”.

So now it’s 2004 and I’m living in Coventry. My best friend Ruth rang me one day and said “Chris, there’s a Reiki class on where I work on Saturday and I want to go but I don’t want to go on my own. Will you come with me?” Well the Universe doesn’t speak any more clearly than that does it! So I went.

Now a day or so before I went, I got a really runny cold, except it wasn’t a cold that made me feel ill, I just had runny eyes and nose. So I went anyway and cried throughout the course. Why was I crying? Well I felt I had come home, that this was where I was meant to be.

What has Reiki done for me?

I have rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition which runs in the family. I’ve traced it back 5 generations, so it was going to get me sooner or later. After receiving my level 2 Reiki attunement, within 6 weeks I had also seen a rheumatologist, had my diagnosis, had the correct aids and adaptations fitted to the house, had splints and walking sticks, and had started to improve. Once that had happened, Reiki could then start work on my condition itself. The rheumatologist told me to come back to him when my condition worsened. I haven’t been back because the condition hasn’t worsened. I don’t take DMARDS or biologics. I rarely take painkillers (but that’s also because I’ve also discovered the power of magnetic jewellery).

The main thing it did was improve my physical health to the point where I could take an academic year out of my life and study massage! Yes I studied and qualified in Swedish massage, aromatherapy massage, Indian head massage and reflexology!

Now here’s the amazing thing it did for me. I only found this out a couple of years ago, when I was being investigated for menopausal problems. You see during the 90s, I had severe kidney problems which meant I had to give up work. Eventually the root cause of the problem was found: I had two deformed kidneys, which I had had since birth, and which had worsened over the years. So once I found this cause, I could live my life accordingly. (Did you know 1 in 5 people have congenitally deformed kidneys, by the way?) Anyway, a couple of years ago, I was having a pelvic ultrasound to determine what had happened to some major fibroids which had caused me grief over the years but had since shrunk. (I wonder how that happened….) The sonographer told me she was going to check to see how other parts of my abdomen were looking while she was at it, and after a while told me “…two normal healthy kidneys…” Well I couldn’t quite believe what I was hearing so I asked her to make sure. She showed me. Two normal healthy kidneys. I wonder how that happened…
